Berkeley City Council approves new West Berkeley zoning district enabling manufacturing + R&D

On March 25, Berkeley City Council unanimously passed  the establishment of a Manufacturing, Research & Development (M-RD) zoning district to encourage redevelopment of a 11.5 acre site in West Berkeley at the former Berkeley Forge & Tool and Pacific Steel Casting plant (at Gilman Street and Eastshore Highway in West Berkeley).

The new “M-RD” zoning district will enable a wide range of modern manufacturing and R&D activities.

Activate Berkeley and AsparaGlue win East Bay Economic Development Alliance Innovation awards

Congratulations to Activate Berkeley for winning the Catalyst award and AsparaGlue for winning the Technology award at the 2025 East Bay Innovation Awards.  It was a great night celebrating all the East Bay businesses whose innovations help our local economy, and the world.

Berkeley Startup Cluster presents to UC Berkeley Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council

On April 2, Berkeley Startup Cluster leader Elizabeth Redman Cleveland provided UC Berkeley's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council an overview of the Berkeley Startup Cluster's objectives and highlighted the network's accomplishments over the past year, including zoning code updates to Keep Innovation in Berkeley and amending Berkeley Municipal Code Section 9.04.165 to exempt the taxation of business gross receipts relating to government research and development (R&D) grants in the public interest.

The Berkeley Innovation Assets Tour series continued with a visit to the Berkeley Lab for new City of Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii, City Manager Paul Buddenhagen, Deputy City Manager David White, and the Office of Economic Development.

The Berkeley Lab, founded in 1931, is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed/operated by UC Berkeley. To date, they have achieved 16 Nobel prizes and 18 National Medals of Science! With a $1.4 billion budget in fiscal year 2024 and approximately 4,000 employees, they strive to create scientific solutions addressing national priorities and practice discovery science. Their entrepreneurial fellowship program, Cyclotron Road, in partnership with Activate Berkeley, has hosted over 100 fellows (86 companies) who have gone on to receive $3.2 billion in follow-on funding with 29 of them still operating in Berkeley.

Project On Ramp seeking companies to host  summer intern

Project Onramp, a program of Life Science Cares, provides access to paid summer internships for undergraduate students who are recipients of Pilgrim Grants, helping to bridge the opportunity gap for these promising young individuals. Project Onramp host companies commit or create internships for high-performing students, not limited to STEM-related roles. The program matches companies with talented candidates with interest in business development, administration, HR, finance, IT, marketing, and more. There is no cost to the program, other than the requirement to offer a paid summer internship.

SigIQ.ai raises $9.5 million funding

Berkeley-based startup SigIQ.ai emerges from 18 months of stealth with $9.5 million funding to transform education through personalized AI tutoring that delivers elite-level instruction at the cost of computation, not hundreds of dollars per hour. The seed round was co-led by The House Fund, which invests in Berkeley's top founders at the inception stage, and GSV Ventures.

Coreshell raises $24 million in a Series A2 round

Coreshell, a Berkeley battery startup, has raised $24 million in a Series A2 round. They are aiming to make lithium-ion battery production in the U.S. vastly cheaper by swapping graphite for its metallurgical-grade silicon.

Rigetti Computing is on the verge of a lucrative quantum leap

With leadership from CEO Subodh Kulkarni, Berkeley-HQed Rigetti is at the forefront of quantum computing. Rigetti has attracted major partnerships to advance quantum technology, including a collaboration with Taiwan-based Quanta Computer, and is eyeing a lucrative government contract with the Department of Defense.

UC Berkeley student launches Code Blue for detecting stroke signs

Ashmita Kumar, a UC Berkeley student, has developed a groundbreaking startup called Code Blue, which uses AI to detect early signs of a stroke using smartphones and other smart devices. The program analyzes facial expressions and speech patterns via a phone or computer’s camera and microphone, alerting users and emergency services if stroke symptoms are detected.

UC Berkeley plans to launch new VC fund this year

UC Berkeley is diving deeper into venture capital with plans to launch the "UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Fund". It will be seeded entirely by donations and the school expects to launch it by the end of the year.

Berkeley Lab creates new molecule

The Berkeley Lab created a new molecule that could point the way to safe disposal of nuclear waste. A team of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientists gave heavy-metal molecule the name "berkelocene".
