Maryland Accepts Donation of Holly Beach Farm – A Unique Chesapeake Bay Property in Anne Arundel County
The Board of Public Works approved the Maryland Department of Natural Resources accepting the donation of Holly Beach Farm, a 293-acre waterfront property in Anne Arundel County, from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Holly Beach Farm, which is just south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, is an important staging and wintering area for migratory waterfowl as well as a nesting site for herons and bald eagles. Read more.

Tracking Land Trust Protected Lands Data
The Maryland Environmental Trust, Maryland Department of Planning and Maryland Department of Natural Resources held a joint webinar on March 1, 2024. Participants learned more about a collaborative effort to collect and map the most comprehensive land trust and private conservation organization protected lands data. This webinar discussed the goals and purpose of the project, explained the data collection process, and allowed time for participant questions.

USFWS is Seeking Public Comments on a Proposed National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Maryland
The draft proposal and environmental assessment for establishing the Southern Maryland Woodlands National Wildlife Refuge in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland is now available for review and public comment. An in-depth, collaborative effort over the past 15 years demonstrated that currently unprotected habitats in these counties support significant populations of fish and wildlife. Learn more.
SALT Conference

Save the date for SALT, a conference focused on saltwater intrusion and sea level rise in coastal agroecosystems, which will be held June 11 and 12, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Md. SALT stands for “salinity-affected land in transition.” It will feature expert speakers in the fields of saltwater intrusion and sea level rise, coastal farming, ghost forests, adaptation solutions and mitigation strategies.  2024 Total Eclipse: What to Expect
The eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, will be a total solar eclipse. It will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun.

The Maryland Protected Lands Dashboard provides a quick assessment of the status of Maryland land conservation at the state, regional, and county levels. The 12 categories of protected lands include federal, state, county, and private programs.
